Art speaks to me. Actually, my art often speaks for me. It helps me articulate thoughts and feelings that don’t have another outlet. My process is simple: breathe deep, choose a sheet of paper, clear the air with palo santo, grab a pastel and make a random mark. From there, I lose myself in the process and do not let myself consciously think about the image that takes shape. I began my art as a dialogue with myself, a way to understand and heal trauma.
I grew up in Louisville, KY but have lived most of my adult life in other places. I lived and worked in Guatemala for twelve years as a mental health professional, human rights activist, and translator. The move back to the US in 2009 was difficult.
